The 1242 SPI is an easy way to get power and torque up when fitting to the Cinquecento Sporting. It is virtually like an engine swap from an 1108 to another 1108. The only difference is that the exhaust needs a tiny modification. Between the down pipe and the cast iron exhaust manifold needs a spacer to be fitted to clear the down pipe under the sump.
The easiest way to make this spacer is to get a bit of mild steel strip or plate of 4mm and make two spacers from it. The required mild steel is obtainable from any steel merchant.
Other than the mild steel longer bolts are needed and a couple of exhaust gaskets. One of them can be used as a template.
Draw the gasket out on the strip of metal and cut out with an angle grinder or a hack saw. Mark the 3 holes and use a center punch before drilling to give the drill bit the correct drilling point. Clamp the cut out bit together with some self-locking grips. Drill the 3 holes out, finally using a 8mm drill bit and stick three 8mm bolts in the three holes Put nuts on and tighten the three bolts. Remove the grips, punch holes with the center punch every 4mm about 3mm inside the big circle all the way round and drill holes with a 3mm drill bit all the way round. Then use a 5mm drill bit and bore out every other hole to 5mm. Push the remaining bit out of the circle and complete the circle by using a round file. All that is left is to fit the gaskets with the longer bolts.
Removal of the engine and fitting is the same as removing and fitting of another 1108 engine.
