Recommended servicing schedule
Weekly checks
- Check/Top up oil level
- Condition and pressures of tyres
- Washer fluid level
- Coolant level
- Brake fluid level
Note : If the coolant needs topped up it’s worthwhile topping up with coolant rather than water – the mixture will become too diluted over time if you keep topping up with water.
Every year or 12,000 miles
Personally I’d check all the usual items every service - such as brake pads, disc condition, shoes, handbrake, check / adjust the clutch via bleeding, drop of oil on the hinges etc.
- Check driveshaft cv boots, balljoint and steering boots for splits
- Check brake lines for signs of corrosion and leaks
- Check the alternator belt condition and tension
- Change the oil and oil filter
Oil capacity is 3.75 litres. Fiat’s recommended grade is 10w40.
Do a engine flush each time as this will aid the oil to stay fresher for longer however stick to either fully or semi synthetic, if you chop and change this greatly effects the oils ability to lube the engine properly.
Every 2 years or 24,000 miles
Carry out the 12,000 mile service plus:
- Change the air filter – or clean your induction kit filter.
- Change the spark plugs NGK BRK5EZ I think are the best to buy
- Change the HT leads
- Check the valve clearances - change shims as necessary.
- Change the coolant – make sure your antifreeze contains corrosion inhibitors. Go for around 50% concentration – 2 litres of antifreeze concentrate will be sufficient. Cooling system capacity is 4 litres.
- Change the brake fluid. Fluid absorbs moisture and ‘goes off’ over a period of time.
That’s about the schedule really, but there are a few things to include at later services:
Every 36,000 miles
- Check the gearbox oil level. 75w90
- Change the cam belt and tensioner
Every 72,000 miles
- Change the gearbox oil. Capacity is 1.7 litres – definitely not 2.4 litres as quoted by Haynes.
Everyone will give you their own favourite recommendations for parts, feel free to add below. This is what I tend to use:
Engine oil: Selenia 10w40
Gearbox oil: Castrol Driveline / Syntrax synthetic or halfords own brand with wynns treatments. Makes a difference to the smoothness and gearchange.
Brake fluid: Castrol Response or other DOT 4 product the higher the number the thinner and vice versa, mess about with the grades and it either clogs or leaks through the calliper seals.
