I am worried that this has happened, it has got so bad now that i am unable to drive my car at all! I can't even drive it to our local Fiat garage to get a reading of whats wrong. At the same time its difficult to explain what its doing. It will take a long time to get to 40mph, its that slow that a tractor over took me (dont Laugh!!) then when i get to a hill the power plumets. A couple of times if i reved the hell out of it above 5,000 rpm it would clear but now it doesnt even do that. It is pretty dangerous now to be honest as roundabouts and junctions are a nightmare. A garage thought it was the Coil packs and then said NO They then gave up as they hadnt a clue of what it could be!! After a few minutes checking what else the problem could be by JR, he noticed the Plugs were soaked in Oil/Petrol - these were changed and so were the leads and the lambda sensors But still nothing. Then he spent a couple of hours trying to see what else it could be. The ECU warning light use to come on every now and then but is now a constant feature!! I know it is so difficult to say what could be wrong, but i am a little stuck now. Could it just be crap in the exhaust, but surely it would have cleared up?! Luckily my Sister has lent me her car to get to work but this is only until the end of the week. Any suggestions?? thanks guys!!

how does the guy know its not the coils? Because you are not sparking so it could be and until you change them you wont know.
What happens is the ECU is the amplifer of the signal, and the coil (like a speaker) transforms that energy. The fault with the ecu is that the coil returns the signal to the ecu and frys the amplifer.
However if the car is running I find it less likely to be the ecu than the coils.
Change the coils first, then consider changing the ecu.
(I have both items for sale from the punto if you need them).

The so called mechanic said it wasn't the coils as when he changed them it made no difference. Peter offererd to take a look and has now fitted a new ECU and it was this - sorry lowtechguy i didnt see your post until after it had been done.
